Restoration & Fitted Work
Newark · Granville · Heath
Not every piece begins in the studio. I also take on woodwork for homes and historic buildings around Newark, Granville and Heath: pieces built to fit a particular room, repair and refinishing of wood furniture, and the careful work of adapting or matching what is already there.
Old woodwork can rarely be bought again. A carved detail that has broken, a run of trim that no longer matches, a salvaged piece that needs a life in another room — these ask for someone who will study the original before cutting anything. Hand carving is a specialty. Everything is built in my own shop, made to be used and kept.
What I Take On
- Built-ins, window seats and banquettes
- Shelving, bookcases and mantels
- Trim and finish carpentry
- Furniture repair and refinishing
- Adapting antique and salvaged woodwork
- Matching an existing carved or molded detail
- Hand carving
Pew to Corner Seat
An antique church pew, reshaped into an L-shaped corner seat for the client's home. A pew back is raked, so the seat, back, cap rail and plinth each meet the corner at a different compound angle — cut once, in old pine, with no second chance in the material. The original carved scroll ends were kept, and the new joints finished to match the old.
Gothic Shutters
A carved shutter assembly built for an interior window opening: a molded surround scribed to the ceiling, and a pair of hinged doors carved with a diamond lattice. Opened, the doors reveal an ogee arch cut into their inner edges.
How It Begins
Send a photograph of the space or the piece, with a few words about what you have in mind. I'll tell you what's possible. If it suits us both, I'll come and measure, and you'll have a written quote before any work begins. Work is guaranteed for a year.
